Axon 20: World’s first under display camera phone

ZTE launches at 1. In September, the world’s first smartphone with an under-screen camera will be launched. The Axon 20 5G will be the consumer smartphone with the new selfie camera in the range. This means that the phone has no bezels or cutouts to drill into, which is essentially the skeleton of the gadget.

Currently, most smartphones, including the Apple iPhone, have notches and holes that go through the screen of our smartphones.

ZTE says the Axon 20 5G will be the world’s first phone to get rid of the ugly screen cutout. We don’t currently know the benefits of cameras under the screen. What we do know is that the front screen will be 100% bezel-less.

While ZTE is thwarting cameras with selfie lenses under the screen, companies like Oppo and Xiaomi have already adopted this innovation a year ago.

To be fair, Oppo was the first to talk publicly about the on-screen camera technology. It unveiled an innovation called the Panoramic View Screen, which forgoes a notch or the look of a selfie camera.

When Oppo introduced the technology, it said it was working on it, and we have no idea when the company plans to economically launch a phone with an under-screen camera. In fact, Xiaomi has also unveiled a smartphone model with a secret camera.

Right off the bat, you could mistake the ZTE Axon 20 5G for a normal modern smartphone. It’s fragile, light, has adjustable corners and four cameras on the back.

Like most mid-range androids and front-ends, the phone has a negligible frame, just a slightly larger jaw than the rest. This is all usual for a phone coming to market in late 2020.

Anyway, if you look closer, you’ll be surprised to see that the ZTE Axon 20’s screen is completely devoid of a pop-up selfie camera or a notch of any kind.

Where’s the selfie camera?

That would be a funny, if not frightening question, once the innovation is implemented. Anyway, the ZTE Axon 20 5G is just the first step towards the fate of phones with invisible selfie cameras, so the dream here is just unbeatable with dark backgrounds and Dark Mode apps.

When you start browsing white websites or using apps with rich, beautiful tones, you’ll notice a strange dark square at the highest point of the screen, where normally the selfie camera with the aperture would be.

This square is actually an area of large pixels that the camera can see through. It is an absolute first generation solution.

Because these pixels are much larger, the area they cover is not exactly the same as the rest of the screen – they are the same tonal distribution conditions. All in all, it’s not a pretty sight.

Does recognition with the camera under the screen work?

Face recognition works surprisingly quickly and well on the ZTE Axon 20 5G, although Recall is a less secure form of facial recognition that relies solely on a single selfie camera.

It works well in low light, but can be hyped by someone who looks like you. So it’s ideal to stick with the single fingerprint sensor for confirmation.

Nevertheless, in case you are interested – a person openly provides to work with this screen under the selfie camera, just like any other phone or tablet that supports this part.

Activate dark mode and do not call back.

On the other hand, if you turn on dark mode and all your apps go dark (or dim), you also choose a blurrier background – the sign works!

The selfie camera disappears in convincing fashion, and you may not remember it until the next time you need it.

Only when watching videos or movies on YouTube does the aforementioned giant pixel square appear, but overall the blur is very low in dark mode.

What do selfies, taken with the camera below the screen, look like?

Photos taken by the Axon 20’s under-screen camera are decent, although a little sensitive around the edges.

In fact, even in good lighting conditions, the camera quality is not as good as that of a mid-range phone with a regular camera.

Faces still look a little delicate, at least when you wrinkle the skin – smoothing features certainly have power, as on many Chinese phones.

Besides normal selfies, you can also take portrait selfies and videos with the camera below the screen. Also for those who may expect similar performance from the camera.

Axon 20 5G: Specifications and features

The main selling point of the Axon 20 5G is undoubtedly the camera that sits below the screen, which affects the design of the screen.

The Axon 20 5G has a 6.92-inch OLED display that covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 shadow range and supports a shadow depth of 10 cycles.

The screen also supports a high animation rate of 90 Hz, a 240 Hz touchscreen display and offers unobstructed full screen viewing. The screen has an FHD+ resolution of 2460×1080 pixels.

ZTE claims to have been able to achieve an under-screen camera configuration and convey five key innovations, including special materials, dual-control chips, interesting driver circuits, an extraordinary pixel array, and exclusive self-service computing. These advances allow ZTE to address a number of specific challenges in its innovation work.

Moreover, the company uses a very strong material for the screen that adjusts the exposure of the screen and the front camera.

The material includes new natural and inorganic video materials, which then improve the light contribution of the front camera display area.

In addition, an underlying stand-alone dual control chip and integrated control circuitry were used to provide shadow synchronization between the front camera and conventional display.

In addition, a special driver layout design and precise segment scaling were used to maintain a strategic distance from obstacles and reduce the impact on the front camera by reducing its size. Moreover, ZTE has developed an exceptional matrix that updates the pixels and improves the stability of the screen, which is a significant improvement. The innovation resembles Xiaomi’s camera layout below the screen.

Moreover, ZTE’s selfie front camera calculation has simplified the performance of the camera in different lighting conditions.

It also supports a pre-programmed dynamic range change, which significantly improves the brightness and contrast of images.

Besides the camera below the screen, the Axon 20 5G also has a super slim design with a thickness of 7.98 mm.

The entire smartphone weighs 198 grams, making it moderately light (it can move) and graceful in the hand. You also get a sub-screen speaker and a unique sub-screen fingerprint scanner gadget installed.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset launches Axon 20 5G. The mid-range SoC is widely used in many Chinese smartphone brands. Models like the Mi 10 Lite 5G, Redmi K30i 5G, OPPO Reno 4/4 Pro, OnePlus Nord, Nubia Red Magic 5G Lite and a few more use this chipset. The processor is a 7nm octa chipset with one Kryo 475 Prime (Cortex-A76) center running at 2.4GHz, one Kryo 475 Gold (Cortex-A76) center running at 2.2GHz and six Kryo 475 Silver (Cortex-A55) centers running at 1.8GHz.

The processor is equipped with 6 GB RAM and an 8 GB RAM adjustment. The phone is available in 128GB and 256GB capacity.

The back of the Axon 20 5G is made of very strong curved 3D glass with a ten-layer structure.

The plate is coated with an optical vacuum coating that creates a texture of the streamer image at the nanometer level.

On the back is a four-camera video camera that folds into the top left corner. The sensors are equipped with a 64 megapixel ultra-high resolution camera. There is also an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree angle, a 2-megapixel focus point and a 2-megapixel wide-angle focus point.

Moreover, the ZTE Axon 20 5G comes with 12 antennas, which is 3-4 more antennas than other vendors. It has an integrated 360 degree design.

The 12 antennas are cleverly organized around the smartphone, and each has its own capabilities.

The phone comes with a dual 5G band. At the point when the mobile network environment becomes vulnerable and the speed of the 5G card becomes excessively sluggish, the ZTE Axon 20’s extraordinary network recognition calculations can brilliantly distinguish and then switch to wireless information services on a second 5G SIM card with lightning speed, recognizing the sequential change of the dual 5G cards to ensure smooth system network operation.

The light is powered by a 4220mAh battery that is charged via the USB-C port. The phone supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ and supports 30W fast charging.

ZTE Axon 20 5G costs

The ZTE Axon 20 5G is priced at ¥2198 (normally Rs 23,500) for a 6GB + 128GB variant, ¥2498 (normally Rs 26,700) for an 8GB + 128GB variant, and ¥2798 (normally Rs 30,000) for an 8GB + 256GB variant.

The phone offers four shade options: Blue, black, orange and purple. The device is currently on the ZTE Mall, and there is no word yet on its global availability.
