Enable or Disable Performance Mode in Microsoft Edge

Learn how to enable or disable performance mode in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge has received several new features in recent updates to improve performance, speed, responsiveness, and reduce the overall amount of resources on your computer. Microsoft continues to work on this aspect of its browser, and the company recently introduced a new performance mode.

There is not much information available on how performance mode works in Microsoft Edge. You’ll find a simple and somewhat vague explanation in the browser that says performance mode optimizes speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU, and battery life. As with all other speed optimization options built into modern browsers, the actual performance boost depends on your PC configuration and other factors. While you shouldn’t expect this feature to significantly improve the performance of your PC or Edge, you can still get noticeable improvements in your browsing experience.

Before you enable performance mode in Microsoft Edge, you should know that this feature is still in the early stages of development. You may encounter bugs.

For now, Microsoft Edge’s Performance Mode feature is only available on the Canary channel with version 91.0.856.0 or later. Go to the official website to get it.

It’s also subject to monitoring for rolling out features, so it may or may not be available to you now.  This means you must first add it to the Settings tab in Edge. However, if you already have this in your settings, you can skip the following steps and go directly to the next chapter.

Adding power mode to limit settings

  1. Close the browser.
  2. On the desktop, right-click the Microsoft Edge Canary shortcut and select Properties from the context menu. FeaturesEdge Canary Quick Coupling
  3. In the Shortcut tab, locate the Target field and add the following argument after msedge.exe: –enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle.

  1. Click OK to save your changes.

Here is an example of what the field goal should look like: C:UsersUsernameAppDateLocalMicrosoftEdge SxSApplicationmsedge.exe –enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle. Note that no point should be placed at the end of the path.

The next time you launch the Edge browser, an option will be added. Here’s how.

Enabling performance mode in Microsoft Edge

  1. Start Microsoft Edge from the modified shortcut.
  2. Open the main menu (Alt + F) and select Settings.

  1. Click on the System tab on the left.
  2. Find the Power Optimization section and the Power Mode item, and select Always on from the drop-down menu.

You’re done.  You have now activated the power mode. For best results, use Power Mode in conjunction with other features, such as Sleep Tabs and Quick Start. There are specific articles on enabling dormant tabs in Microsoft Edge and on enabling Startup Boost in Microsoft Edge.

Note that enabling performance mode in Microsoft Edge affects the functionality of dormant tabs. When performance mode is enabled, the browser sets the sleep tab timeout to 5 minutes and blocks the ability to change this setting. To set a time limit for the standby tabs, you must first turn off power mode.

The sleep tab delay is blocked when power mode is active.

Learn how to disable performance mode if you experience problems or are not satisfied with its operation.
